Excerpt from the October 2007 Issue:

"On 8th December a dinner was held at the King’s residence, Fort Belvedere.  Those present at the dinner were King Edward Vlll, his brothers Albert, Duke of York, and George, Duke of Kent; Sir Walter Monckton, legal advisor to the King, Sir Edward Peacock, the King’s private financial advisor, Sir George Allen, the King’s solicitor, Sir Ulick Alexander, Keeper of the Privy Purse, Stanley Baldwin, Prime Minister and Thomas Dugdale, Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister.  The Prime Minister had come to the Fort for an audience with the King, which lasted for over five hours.

It was following this meeting that Edward confirmed his decision to renounce the throne and abdicate so that he could marry Mrs Wallis Simpson after her divorce became absolute.

The instrument of abdication was signed at Fort Belvedere on 10th December 1936 and was witnessed by Edward’s three brothers.  The following day Parliament passed the Abdication Act and  Edward broadcast his farewell speech to the nation from Windsor Castle.  On 12th December he left England on the destroyer Fury to spend the rest of his life in exile.  His brother, the Duke of York, was proclaimed King George VI.

In later life, Edward would remark to friends “I do have a slight advantage over you.  It helps to be able to remind your bride that you gave up a throne for her”.
